An added benefit of snow tires on the front, at least if it's a 4x4,
is that when you really need the traction the rears won't do you much
good but the fronts would still engage and have the benefit of all the
weight and as Jon said it will help with stopping and steering either
way.
My truck has the wrangler ATs and it did great in the snow when I was
in Michigan and when I've gone snowboarding here in Washington. They
also do good in soft sand when dropped to 15 psi. Of course 4 wheel
drive helps but they do bite well.
