Sounds like good advice to me. It makes sense, when I think about it.
The most I plan is TB, PCM (though I flinch at another vehicle that
requires 92 octane after the damage my (blonde) wife did to my Neon)
exhaust, re-do the Y-pipe from the exhaust manifolds back, headers
(found a place that still sells the Doug Thorley headers), and the
standard ghetto CAI I've make upteen-times with black ABS plastic and a
big K&N cone filter. A limited slip diff in the rear end would be a
must as well.
Cam I'd like to do "someday" but this whole push rod thing is new to me
and I HATE doing valve springs with the heads on. If I pull the heads I
know a guy locally who can do a decent mild port job on the cheap, but
the only reason I'd pull the heads is because I had to. The M1 intake
looks good but I don't know if I want to spend that much money when a
modified Edelbrock Air-cap intake can be had for a bit more money from
Hughes Engines, or spend a couple hundred less for one of their modified
stock intake manifolds.
I want a decent low end but plan to focus more on a strong midrange
without it choking on the top end. Towing isn't my goal, mostly I plan
on bombing around town in 4wd in the snow and hauling "stuff" in the
bed. 3" exhaust sounds like it would be fine for that goal.
I like to research these things and have a plan before I buy. I've
bought cars on a "whim" before and regretted it when I had to do more
work than I'd have needed if I'd done the research before hand.
