It's not a Dakota and not 120k, but on my Neon at 59k I pulled the valve
covers and the only brown I found was the light tan of the oil puddles:

This is on a car that I bought with 33k on it that was always run on
dino juice oil and switched to 5w30 Mobil 1 as soon as I bought it.

Friend of mine's 2000 4.7L Dakota has the "oil sludge under the oil cap"
problem. He was running a normal oil/synthetic oil mix to save money.
He switched to 100% synthetic and the sludge under the cap problem
disappeared soon after.

I've been tempted to put synthetic oil into my 3.0L Voyager, but it
leaks/burns enough oil at 195k (though much helped by new valve cover
gaskets and removing crud from the totally coked up crankcase breather
port) for me to risk dropping something slipperier into it. ;)
