Not completely true. The engine and transmission have to be destroyed,
but the salvage yard has 180 days to sell off whatever else they can
before they have to crush the vehicle.

Print off the official rules from the government and take it in.

Page 5 says:

 "The dealer must agree to transfer the trade-in vehicle to a disposal
  facility that will crush or shred it so that it will never be returned
  to the road, although parts of the vehicle, other than the engine block
  and drive train (unless the drive train is sold in separate parts), may
  be sold."

More details start on page 51, that's where it specifies they can take up
to six months to crush it.
