A locker will always give you more backlash than any other option.
If you really want to know if you're in spec, Rob, pull the cover and
use a magnetic base and plunger type dial indicator on the tip of a
ring gear tooth. I don't have 8.25" specs in front of me but it
should be around .008" at the ring gear.
That usually translates into say 1/8-1/4" rotationally at the pinion.
See if your pinion moves in and out of the diff at all. that would
indicate a loss of preload or bearings going bad.
I do all my own diff work - along with pretty much everything else -
and with the right tools it's not bad at all. I've set up probably
8-9 gear sets now. My first two were the 5.38s into the Dakota about
3 years ago now. Best mod since the tons. 203/205 doubler and my most
recent 42" SX IIs are close 2nd and 3rd, but 2:1 mid range would be
useless without the gears, and heavy 42s would be miserable with 4.10s.
