Further Fuel pump questions

I told of a fuel pump problem last week, and got several good responses; I
decided on a used pump, installed: cost $200.00. But just the day the pump
quit, something unusual happened. Morning starts usually had me engage the
starter for no more than a second to fire up the 318. But that day the truck
spun for almost five seconds. I thought nothing of it until I got the truck
back, and noticed that since the repair on Friday, the longer cranking has
been the norm. Further starts have been quick to five or ten seconds,
depending on the rest time and pitch of the truck while park. It is obvious
that the fuel rail is not holding pressure. my questions are:

1. Does the return line exist? If so, is there a check valve in the line to
maintain pressure in the Fuel Rail?

2. I read a comment today that suggested the inline fuel filter does not
exist in my '99 Dakota. Does anyone know the line pressure normally in the
fuel feed line, and the fuel rail? (I'm thinking of installing a Fuel
Filter.)

3 Since my vocation for the last 18 years has been involved with water
purification, I am familiar with many types and sizes of check valves,
usually plastic; Polyethylene both high and low density construction, and
some made of Polycarbonate. While either type would likely be fine with the
gasoline contact, I wonder about the heat level that any location would be
subject to. There are lots of plastic fittings for electrical connectors,
where would be the coolest placement for a plastic check valve somewhere
inline?

Thanks for any comments offered.
