Carrol Shelby passed away Thursday May 10 , 2012 . age 89 : Carrol was an icon in racing and a humanitarion with his Childrens Heart Foundation . He brought us our Shelby Dakota along with the Dodge Viper . He started off with his passion for speed , putting American V8's in British Sports Cars . Knocking off the Ferrari's with his creations ( AC Cobra's & Shelby Cobras ) . Factory Sunbean Tigers . Carrol was Humble and always called himself a Hot Rodder and not the Champion he was . In the 60's in Canada , his influence caused us teenagers to modify our MG's , Healeys and Triumphs with small block 8's .
