Drove all different combinations this past summer before deciding.
My opinion/observations.
Drove a v8 with auto trans (sport) oversize tires. Thing had
plenty of juice 'cept it was loud as heck! What a roar, interior noise
was too much IMHO. (Attribute this to the Sport as opposed to the
SLT package.. more firewall, underbody insulation carpeting in the cab etc:?)
Then drove a v6 auto. Thing was a dog.. felt underpowered IMHO.
The combination I really liked was the v6 5 speed. This felt a bit
peppier, (due to manual trans) I liked this and thought it might be a
good trade off for a few mpg? Anyone with 4x4 v6 5speed out there?
Have also heard that you cant get the beefier manual trans with v6
though.
(all were 4x4 BTW)
What I ended up ordering... ( a couple weeks ago)
96 SLT V8 Auto (my wife won this battle ;-) 1800 GWVR HD serv.
group 4x4 w/ protection pkg (skid plates) and limited slip.
3.55 rear end.
hoping to see it here by X-mas!? :) We do a lot of camping,
rockclimbing and backpacking out in the wilds of Arizona so
4x4 (esp. on a smaller read: not full size truck) was a necessity.
Hope to add a K&N filter and a camper shell soon after the first of
the year. For the computer swap out (Mopar Perf.) does that then
require you to run Premium? (expensive down here)
one last one.. anyone know what the current run rate at the Dakota
factories are? Heard they were pumping them out like crazy before
the line shuts down (sometime in Feb) for the model change (97)
