There was a TSB on the Dakota rims too if I remember correctly.

One way to prevent the rust (too late once it shows) is to coat the chrome
with one of those polymer sealants that you've seen on TV as the "once a
year car polish" It seals all the imperfection in the plating and keeps
the rust from forming. My bumpers are now almost two years old and have
several off-road 'trophys' on them, but no rust. And I'm in Massachusetts
as well.

Don't know about the rims' chrome, I have Al wheels.
