I've had the same problem with my 92 Dakota. I've also got the 318 and
the 4 speed automatic. It seems we have the same problems, I have a
lousy paint job, it seems the clearcoat completely peeled off on a
section of the air intake grill right below the windshield.
Naturally, the paint in that area looks horrible. I've also got the
transmission problem, it doesn't go when you put it in any forward gear,
so I've got to put it in reverse for a split second, and then move it
back into drive. I suppose it also moves if you wait long enough, and
floor the gas, but that's dangerous. I had the truck into the dealer,
and seeing as it's a random problem, they couldn't find it. The stupid
service advisor said that next time it happens, bring it right to the
dealer, and leave the truck outside in gear, and go get them to look at it.
