I've looked into this a little too. I have an 89, 3.9, auto, reg cab,
short box, just flip 190,000 miles. It is sweating on power. From
previous owning a 92 5.2 Dakota, I've seen that the radiator support was
different. They changed this with the new front end style. It looked
like they push the radiator out a few more inches (to fit the older
style 5.2). From that I decided not to try the upgrade on mine 89. I
think I will just rebuild mine if I can just get it to die. The body
does not have a trace of even surface rust.
5.2 note: I just got done last weekend installing 1993 5.2 V8 out of a
full size into a 43 Plymouth 2 door coupe. I needed and wanted to use a
new style V8 because I was tight on space, and I really enjoy working
with fuel injection. The compact water pump, alternator, A/C, and uni
belt set up of the new V8 made it a perfect fit. Last weekend I
finished making a wiring harness for it and fired it up. That 5.2
sounds nice breathing out through a true 2 1/2 dual exhaust. The drive
line is complete using the HD A500 4 speed auto (727) coupled to 9" with
4:11 at the end. Highway cruiser with beef for around town.
I better get back to work.
