Loud "roar"?

Every once in awhile.. (well okay now quite a bit since it's gotten
HOT down here in Phoenix) the engine on my 96' 4x4 ext. cab
SLT V8 Auto. seems to roar loudly, until you get up to highway speed
and the tranny shifts into OD. I notice the RPMs on the tach are not
really different, but the thing sounds terrible.. !?

Have heard that a double clutched engine fan is the cause (from another
friend with a Dak) and it goes into high RPM mode when it's hot.. however
the engine temp gauge seems to be not that high.

Has anyone else experienced this? Thinking of taking back in to the
dealer to have it checked, but wanted to ask here first.
