I've recently had the same problem with my '95 Dakota (5 spd, V6, SLT) about a
month or so ago (soon after I started using the A/C). The dealer took a look
at it and the fix was to give the evaporator a chemical cleaning. This was to
clean off any mildew and junk, and the cleaner also is supposed to prevent new
growth from starting. The dealer couldn't tell me how to prevent it from
happening again, he said it "just happens". Funny, though, that I have a 19
year old Pontiac which operates in the same weather, and it's A/C never
smelled. Anyway, the fix seems to have worked so far, can't comment on long
term effectiveness, though - at least I have two more warrenty years!
