Sounds like it might be the vehicle speed/motion sensor if it dies when
coming to a stop. The sensor is located on the transmission tailshaft and
has the driven end of the speedometer cable attached to it. Mine all of a
sudden would die when coming to a stop, shifting to neutral and blipping
the throttle would keep it from dying, but was a major pain in the butt.
The sensor costs about $50 or so and can be replaced in about 15 minutes.
About the upshift light coming on in fifth gear though I don't know. When
I put the MOPAR SBEC on my '92 the cruise control wouldn't work and when
we got that fixed (unplugged a wire in the 60 pin connector to the SBEC)
the upshift light was on all the time except when it was supposed to be.
I covered it with black electricians tape. Your SBEC may have an internal
fault, or the sensor may make it think it's bad. Pull the fault codes by
turning the key on, off, on, off then on and leave it on (don't turn it to
the start position, just "on". After the check engine light goes out it
will blink at you like blink, blink, blink, pause, blink, blink = 32. If
you get any code but 12 (battery disconnect) or 55 (end of code search)
you may have a problem.
Good luck.
