I'd be willing to bet that if it was driven for any length of time with
the driveshaft/U-joints unbalanced that the pinion bearing could have
gotten screwed up, and that the gears could also have taken a beating. It
should be possible to check for improper gear wear/contact by pulling the
cover and looking at it (if you know what to look for). Someone who
specializes in differentials should take a look at it soon before the
whole thing is ruined. Them are called EXPENSIVE NOISES!
