I have the 1450# (light) payload pkg. on my '95 Dakota, and while
placing my motorcycle carrier in my class III hitch (total weight about
380-400# with bike on rack w/full tank of gas) the rear end of my truck
squats pretty low.
I know you can't run with air shocks...but have come up with a
couple options.
#1 I could put on a overload spring rated @ 500#s, but causes the
rear of the truck to RAISE up until 500# of weight is added (not good
for me). Cost = $125 installed
#2 I could put on a progressive over load spring rated @ 1500#, and
it allows stock ride, stock height, but will keep truck 'level' with
up to a 1500# load.. Hmmm sounds kinda good... Cost = $240 installed
#3 I could get 2 leafs a side added to the rear, bringing a
slightly stiffer ride (like a 2000# payload pkg). The total rating of
the spring setup is 2200# (figure 2000# to not max. out truck).
Cost = $335 installed, and if I buy new shocks at that time
installation on the shocks is free.
With my bike carrier I get 10" of clearance currently, but this 10"
is 38" BEHIND the bumper...So driving in/out of semi-steep driveways
causes the rack to scrape a litte.
