I'm on my third A500 in my 89 Sport but I think I may have things
straightened out now.

The first had a noisy overdrive and the Dealer told me to stop using the OD
immediatly and bring it in. They rebuilt it under warranty (80,000km's)

The transmission grenaded while exiting the main highway at 160,000km's
almost to the mile. I swear the truck lifted a foot off the road when it
broke! Chrysler wanted nothing to do with it and said they don't do
transmissions off warranty! I was stuck and managed to get it to a Mister
Transmission who took it apart.
They rebuilt it from front to back, replaced the torque converter (old one
filled with shavings) to a tune of $2700 (gasp!) and threw in a Trans
cooler for nothing (I should bloody well hope so!) He told me that he had
not seen too many Dakotas but that the Astro vans with OD were his main
business.

This is what he told me to do. Change the tranny fluid and filter every 20
- 25K. Dirt in the OD was the major cause of OD and eventually
transmission failure. I have done this since the rebuild with
semi-synthetic fluid as well as installing a remote trans filter.

Have 110.000 on this trans with no signs of problems. I think the
combination of Semi-synthetics, remote filter, remote cooler and regular
changes MIGHT have my problems beat! (I hope)
