It sounds like the thermostat since the coolant temp signal to the SBEC
and to the temp guage are (apparently) different signals. The
thermostat's not hard to replace, but a local dealer managed to bust off
one of the gooseneck bolts in the intake manifold of a friends Dakota and
bought him a new manifold. I managed to change mine in about 45 minutes
(I'm slow) without breaking anything, and the truck runs much better. BTW
a 12 code is battery disconnect, and a 17 code is engine temp low too long
change thermostat code. You'll need a thinwall 3/8 drive 1/2 inch socket
or a 1/4 drive 1/2 inch socket, a 6 inch extension and a ratchet handle to
get the gooseneck loose if you do it yourself. Easy job.
