Gregg: I had a similar problem on my 89 Sport. There is a slip joint in
the steering column about 6" from the steering box. Mine was seized up and
causing any movement in the column to transmit up the shaft causing
clicking sounds you could feel as well as hear. Undo the bolt on the
column just above the shaft and try to get the slip joint out. (took half a
day to get mine out with hammers, heat, swearing). I put wheel bearing
grease on mine before re-assembling (won't wash out) and all has been well
since. Check it out. Might be your problem.
