Clacking noise?

I recently bought a used 94 Dakota Sport with the Magnum V-6 motor. I has
a very strange clacking (for want of a better word) sound, I removed the
serpentine belt and the noise is still there, and it stays pretty constant
at all Rpm's. A friend of mine has a 94 Dakota with the same motor and
same noise. Anyone else have this problem?
