     kendall,

the new v8 trans in the dakota is the 44RE wide-ratio automatic. i
have the specs for the gear ratios somewhere but i can't seem to find
them. i'll forward when i can locate.....anybody else have the info?
i do know that first and second gear are supposed to be lower....and
your o.d. is a button on the shifter, right? the engine-management
electronics are also supposed to be improved to smoothen gear-hunting.

i wrestled with the auto/5spd choice for awhile finally giving in the
the stick and a 3.55 SG. mine also (one month old) has buckets, tilt
(no cruise), no power stuff, and the 318.

how's it go with the auto? mine just tears up the tires in first.
i'm think i'm going to get a set of the base model steel wheels, widen
2 for the rear, and mount 285/70/15's to pull some gear out and put
down a wider tread. i love that big 'n' little look!!

I have been a 5 speed man for a long time. I just purchased a 97 318
Auto about a month ago, for trophy gettin(Most consistant wins at the
local strip) machine. I was currious if there is an easy way to tell
what tranny I have. I believe it is an A518, but not sure. It came
equiped with Buckets,SG,3.92,tilt,cruise...no power stuff. Also I
remember a thread a while back about a shift kit for the 500-518
tranny. Could this person stepforward at the risk of repeating
themself.

Thanks,

Kendall
