I don't know if this applies to the '97's, but on my '93, I wanted to
shorten the shifter some to a more comfortable height. I found that the
knob is 2-piece. When you unthread the bottom part from the top, there
are more threads inside the top part, and it screwed right back onto the
stalk, but 1/2 inch lower. It hasn't come loose before or since.
