I believe, at least where I live, any trailer greater than half the weight
of the tow vehicle requires trailer brakes. I suspect you are overloading
your brake system.

I towed a 6,000 lbs. trailer (no brakes) with my 3/4 ton (much bigger
brakes and heavier) for several miles .... very scarey, would never do it
again.
