Sorry bill, I meant 85 mph in 2nd gear... NO Seriously...My '91 would only
go 85 mph max... Anything above that would cause OD to kick down, and the
rpm's would go above 5300 rpm (well above the hp/tq curve of the '91--PRE
Magnum engines). I tried, BELIEVE ME... Once it actually went from
OD- (@ 85 mph) to D, then 2nd!, then back to D... The RPMS shot up well
into
the red zone, then the rev. limiter kicked in..... I was passing on a small
grade..
and when it did this the truck almost killed it self (driveline crunch,
on-off-on
power)...
What I hated most about the automatic was while towing up a grade
and the darn transmission would hunt between D-2nd, D-2nd...and even with
a good run-up @ the grade...

I had the transmission/truck checked out twice... Both times nothing was
wrong, no error codes, etc. I checked my trusty Haynes manual, and found
that
that anything above 3/4 throttle causes the computer to do a kick down out
of
OD on the transmission... It was so abrupt sometimes, that it would go
down
to D, then pause, then drop immediately to 2nd gear, find that 2nd gear was
too
low, then come back to D...

The transmission was A-500 (not the 518)... The 318 pre-magnum
was a TBI holley (like the Shelby V8's), and produced about 145-165 hp
(depending who you talk to). When I went truck shopping in '95 I drove
an automatic, and a 5 speed..(I actually drove 10 different trucks in all..
All Dakotas). I didn't like the feel of the automatic with the hammer
down... (down shifting when 'it' felt like it). I know that's the way
they are
designed, and they do 'haul'... Sometime the auto would be nice
(rush hour traffic... Drinking coffee in the morning, etc.) My '95 5 speed
towed my jetski trailer to the river through the mountains 3 weeks after
I bought the truck (in '95)... I was waiting to downshift on the grades...
Never happened (70 mph in 5th with cruise and AC on).. My '91 would drop
down to 55, and be between D and 2nd on the grades (3- 6% grades, with
4 mi, 6 mi, and 13 mi length).

A major part of the problem was the pre-magnum 318...A lot less
HP than a Magnum (165 max vs. 220/230)... People with V6 Dakotas could
the hills faster than me!
