Rob, I actually thought that way when I had a Mitsubishi p/u,
and went to an automatic Dakota... With the 5 speed in my '95 Dakota,
I've had no trouble pulling a boat out of a launch ramp (and one of the
ramps
I use is a dirt, no concrete type with rocks!) With the V8, I can idle out
of the
water with little or no throttle...So I don't slip the clutch, or in the
case of my
Mitsubishi-smoke it! I know 3.90 gearing and sure grip helps, so the
difference
between the auto and 5 speed on a launch ramp shouldn't be a big
deal...I've had
both auto and 5 speed, and know...
I ride dirt bikes, so I know when/how to use the clutch... And how the
clutch can KILL you if you abuse it (like a lot of people do while pulling
out with
manual trans.) With a low power engine, you need RPMS to keep it going,
thus
people slip the clutch... With tons of low end torque, the clutch on my
truck
merely is released slowly, the truck moves... 4500# boat/trailer combo...
I do
occasionally get a little wheel spin when it's slimy... But when did, so
did the
guy next to me in a FE-ORD F250... and he had an automatic... Go figure.
