I agree. I personally prefer an auto myself. I had a 5 speed in my other
new Dakota, an 88, and it was fine for highway driving and cruising. But
around town, it got to be where it seemed like all I was doing was
shifting. Twenty years ago this may have been fun, but no thanks, give me
my auto today.
No offence to the 5 speeders out there, but why is the auto an option and
not the other way around?

I've had both and I'll take an automatic on a boat launch ramp any day.
But just to qualify it further, I used to think a manual transmission was
the only way to go with a pickup (especially 4x4), but that was in the days
of three speed automatics and 4:11 rear ends. The auto gave you lousy gas
mileage both in the city and the highway and reduced power.
With a modern 4 spd. automatics and lock-up torque converters, those
problems are solved. Since my primary objective is function and comfort,
not racing Fords, I'll take an automatic any day.
