Sounds like you have the same problem I described about 3 weeks ago (check
the archives and search on "steering"). The problem lies in the steering
column shaft . Look next to the power steering pump and you will see the
steering shaft u-joints. The weak link is where the larger diameter
steering shaft is inserted into a smaller diameter shaft. Mine has some
play which gives that clunking sensation when accelerating from a stop or
hitting the brakes. I also felt it over bumps. Solution (and it's a cheap
one!) - take a rigid piece of metal and two heavy hose clamps and use it to
brace the junction of the two different diameter steering shafts. Fixed my
problem!
