This ideal transmission you wrote about is actually available(well, close
anyways) in a Ferrari F355. It is called the F1 and cost about $8000, but,
if you can afford a Ferrari, you can afford the transmission. I think it
uses a paddle of the steering wheel to change gears. Where the normal gear
shift lever is, there is a small T-Handle to select forward, reverse, auto or
manual. It is the same system the use in the F1 race cars. There is an
article on it in this month's Car and Driver or Motortrend.
