I think you've put your finger on it. I've always bought 2 wheel drive
trucks, since I seldom REALLY have to go anywhere in really rotten
weather. But I always stash the stock rear tires before the first
winter comes and put some blocky mud & snow tires on the rear (and cycle
the stock tires through the front end as tires wear out). And with the
Dakota, I got limited slip.
This comment doesn't directly address your recent experience, since lack
of grip at the front was your problem. But there is no substitute (in
my experience) for an aggressive tread pattern which will not pack with
snow.
