I really love my new dakota, but three things seem inconvenient with the

interior styling.
<SNIP>
 3) The 4x4 on indicator is on the floor. I know this is true of many
    trucks, but I still dislike it. There is a light on the '97 dashes
    that tells you when the windshield washer fluid is low, but they
    couldn't put a "4x4 engaged" light anywhere.
<SNIP>

I think you have a dash light out. My 98 has an indicator light that is
labled "Part Time 4 Wheel Drive". This is located just right of center
in the lower portion of the instrumet cluster. Check your owners manual,
you should see where it is supposed to be. Maybe you have a 2 wheel
drive dash.
BTW, on the gear swap discussion/argument. I have the 3.92LSD with the
auto tranny and yes it will smoke the rears, but only if I really get
into the gas. Under normal (defensive) driving, the tires are holding
very tightly.
