My '98 dak also has the part-time light on the instrument cluster. But
you've got the part time/full time wrong. That's the way it used to be,
but now part time and full time both have 2h 4h and 4l, but the part time
is for use on loose surfaces to allow for slippage of the inner front wheel
in a turn. The full time has a different transfer case(I assume to allow
slippage) that so that you can drive in four wheel drive any time or all
the time. Your owner's manual should say something about not using 4h or 4l
on dry pavement; it can damge your drivetrain.
I hope that full time is available soon on the dakotas.

I guess what I was referring to is called AWD by Subaru and others
(although "all" wheels never drive at once
-so that's a misnomer).

Usually there's some sort of torque split (planetary gears/viscous
coupling) to allow the front/frear slippage
with front getting say 40% to rear 60%. I've seen the optional transfer
case on the Dak order sheet, but wonder
if it's another R/T-like carrot whose availablilty keeps walking away . I
would think with the Durango that 4-HI
is the viscous coupled mode, but 4-LO still allows a firm F/R lock.

As for not using 4-Hi on other than loose surfaces I would'nt worry too
much except making turns on dry. If the weather is iffy (bands of on/off
snow or bad rain) I'll pop it in. It's too late to reach for the lever if
you suddenly
come on a bad situation while rounding a corner! :-) Once I know the roads
are gonna stay dry for a bit it's out.

I think too many people get paranoid about putting it in 4WD until
absolutely necessary (which may be too late!). I've done lots of "launches"
across busy wet intersections popping it in for the moment vs spinning the
lightly
loaded rear tires. The tool is there -so use it! Got 200k miles out of my
Nissan that way with no 4WD problems,
so although one shouldn't drive prolonged on dry, your drivetrain doesn't
suddenly become toast with this type of
4WD if driven with discretion (all tires are same size of course!)
