Huh. On my '93, the knob unscrewed counterclockwise with what I would
call a medium amount of effort. There are flats on what I will call the
adapter on the bottom of the knob to aid in the effort.

Then... I unscrewed the adapter from the knob (also counterclockwise).
Up inside the knob, there were more threads. I screwed the knob
(without the adapter) back onto the shift stick, and ended up with a
knob about 1/2 inch lower and with marginally shorter throws.
