Because the drivers sit in custom moulded seats, held in place by
heavy-duty 4 (or more) point restraints, surrounded by a steel roll cage in
a car that is designed in large part to dissipate energy and protect the
driver in the event of a crash. If Detroit built cars like that we wouldn't
need airbags either.
