There also seems to be a lot of praise heaped on Ford for it's OHC
modular V8 engine program. Unlike most of you on the list, I appreciate
FOMOCO, but think it missed the target wrt their latest engine packages.

The simple fact remains: you can squeeze much more performance much
more cheaply out of the Windsor block 302 than you will ever be able to
with the recent 4.6 modular. Mainly because the SOHC head design is
fundamentally limited, and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot you or
your machine shop can do about it (according to the Ford list scuttlebutt).

Maybe the 5.4 package or the DOHC head design are executed better, but
we're talking big fat bucks to upgrade, let alone modify.

The main reasons the manufacturers are going modular is to help them
achieve legislative (emissions, etc.) and cost/manufacturing goals, which
just can't be met with the older pushrod designs. Raw performance is not
the main issue at all.

Let's just hope that Chrysler does a better job out of the chute with
their OHC modular program.
