Sounds a bit high, maybe $200 to $300. You are probably paying
an upcharge for his notoriety. It cost me $100 to get a fiberglass
tonneau painted in California (high cost of labor area) for my 97
Dakota, and it matched the factory orange peel perfectly, and this
is a black truck. Two years ago I got a quote from a painter who
does show car paint jobs (granted I was not looking for true show car
quality) to paint a full size ('89) Blazer. Remove all trim, fiberglass
cap, bumpers, insignias, glass, etc., and get it down to bare metal
first (factory paint too poor then to paint over) -- labor, materials,
everything $2000. This included inside the doors and jambs.
Where do you live, maybe his prices reflect high cost of living area,
i.e., Hawaii? Maybe he just thinks very highly of himself. When I get
all mods done to my truck, I'm taking it to the guy in Houston for a
custom paint job. I live in Dallas now, but the round trip drive and a
round trip airline ticket is worth it. There are guys in the Dallas area
who paint vehicles that appear in car and truck magazines (i.e., Truckin
and Street Rodder), but they want at least as twice as much and do
not appear to care much about one's project. I guess 'fame' and all that.
