The one big difference between the two is that Slick 50 doesn't
actually work... (And I've heard the horror stories of it actually
doing damage to engines).

There are a few reasons I use synthetic. One is that it is simply
better. Sure, there is bound to be a point of diminishing marginal
returns, but who can say for sure exactly where that is? The average
Joe may get along just fine, but I've recently become interested in drag
racing, and I drive only a little less hard on the street. I also tow.

What if my thermostat were to stick shut, and the underhood temps
soared? I like the fact that my oil will still be protecting the
engine when the dino stuff would have broken down.

The synthetic stuff is better, and more forgiving when you "cross the
line". That's worth a lot more to me than $500 every 100,000 miles.
