No urban legend. In fact, Mercedes will not honor warranty claims for
leaking if owner has switched to synoil. Don't know about today, but as
late as two years ago, synoil was NOT on MB's approved list of lubricants.
The leaks apparently don't have anything to do with its being slicker, but
it's chemical composition has some ill effect on certain older gaskets.
BTW, I was advised by dealer to keep a log book on oil changes and other
self-performed maintenence. Date, mileage, oil brand & weight.
