Thermostats

Hey ya'll, I keep getting a 17 message on my 88' Dakota, which is "vehicle
did not reach operating temperature" How can I take care of this? SHould
I get a 180 thermostat? Even though it is a cooler thermo, I think maybe
mine is going bad and that is why I'm getting 17... any suggestions?
