Well Woodgate, I swapped a 72 360 into mine but never had too =
worry about emissions up here in PA. yet. Mine is a 88 2WD shortbed and =
I used 904 trans. with my swap for the added quickness they give you. I =
had to fabricate almost everything from the motor mounts to the =
crossmember for the trans. Did your 87 have the V6 in it? If it did all =
of the accsesories off of it will bolt right up to the 360 with no =
probs. I used a A body 8 3/4 rear out of a 69 Dart and had to weld new =
spring perches and shock mounts on it. My stock backing plates + brake =
drums bolted right up too it! I still have the stock frame under mine =
and run 29.5x11.5 Mickey Thompson slicks under it with room to spare so =
you should have no prob. with your 31's. I should tell you also that the =
A body rear was actually 1 1/2 " narrower than the original! Also had to =
move in the inner fenderwells in the bed for clearance. Before I =
converted it to a full time racer I had all of the guages and factory =
accsessories including the column shift working perfectly so if your =
friends and you have a little time and "shimm riggin ability" it should =
be no big deal. Probably take you more than a weekend though. Good luck! =

My dakota is an 87 4wd longbox and came with a 3 speed auto. I =
have the official Dodge 87 dakota service manual and it refers to the =
trans as a "loadflight". I assume it to be similar if not the same as =
the torque flight 727 in my Ramcharger. I have heard that the 904 is a =
bit more efficient than a 727 but the 727 is better suited to high hp, =
drag racing, towing, etc. I need 4WD where I live as there are only two =
seasons winter and road construction. =20
       =20
My dakota currently has a factory 3.9 between its fenders. Its =
good to hear that all accessories will fit as we just redid the whole ac =
system. Half the year its colder than heck with a lot of snow and the =
other half its atleast 80 with high humidity. A good heater and AC is a =
must up here. I will have to use the A.I.R. pump from the 3.9 on the 5.9 =
as the one on the Ramcharger took in too much water and seized up while =
wheeling. The belt burnt up flew off (I picked it up) and I never fixed =
it as it passed the smog test with out it hooked up. I guess considering =
that then the 3.9's pump should be sufficient. Actualy I would'nt be =
suprised if they were the same part. I went to the local Dodge dealer =
with a creeper. The salesman alowed me to look at a 4wd model with 318. =
I will probably get new motor mounts for the motor. I'll just look up =
what parts the factory V8's use and buy them. By getting all the O.E.M =
parts ahead of time and putting it in just like the boys on the line do =
and considering that all accessories will bolt on, we should have no =
problem doing the install in a weekend. In all probability I won't need =
to fabricate anything. The only thing I am uncertain about now is what =
radiator to use. I'm sure that the radiator on the 3.9 is too small. I =
need something that can provide ample cooling for moderate towing (16-20 =
ft fishing boats) and off road trail driving (slow moving driving in =
lowrange). I'm sure city milage will go down a tad but with self control =
of my right foot it won't be to bad. If the milage is even halfway (as i =
suspect it to be) inbetween the two trucks I'll be happy. It will =
probably get identical milage on the freeway when driven with milage in =
mind. The old 3.9 does'nt like hills and it absolute sucks when towing. =
I'll set cruise at 70 (our limit on outstate hwy's) and on hills it will =
drop down to 60 or so depending on the hill. My ramcharger would'nt slow =
down a bit and the engine would hardly need any throttle to keep a =
steady pace. I really think it will get much better milage while towing =
when the 360 is in the Dakota as it won't need to rev half as high. The =
360 has a factory Q-jet on it. The small primary barrels should help =
milage and the secondaries prooved to be a kick in the pants even in the =
much heavier and far less aerodynamic Ramcharger. I will no longer need =
to shut off AC on the freeway on ramps or towing when I see a hill =
ahead!=20
