The hold the trip meter thing is an instrument panel check. It should
move all of the gauges, as well as check all the segments of the digital
display. Thats why you saw all 8's (as the 8 uses all of the segments
for each digit), and then it 'squiggles' as it activates each segment
individually...

I have a '98 R/T CC and the three-times with the key doesn't work . I
did
however hold the trip-meter in while turning the key on three times and
first the mileage indicator said "CHECK" , then it showed "TRIP
88888888.8"
and then it flashed all these little squiggly lines on the display and
then
that was it . I am guessing that when it flashes the squiggly marks that
it
is checking for codes and since mine is new , it didn't find any .
