TCASE & Top Plate Air Filter Question

OK well this weekend I finally flushed and filled my transfer case with
Amsoil ATF and was satisfied with how easy it really was, and about $75
cheaper than having the dealer do it. All it took was a trip to Sears for
a 30MM wrench and to my local Amsoil dealer and about 30 minutes later I
was done. Well as I was cleaning up afterwards, I popped the hook on my
Dak and I was looking at my oh-so-very-stock cold air intake system. The
only "mod" I have done to it was to remove that "plate" at the front of
the hose on near the grill about one year ago. Well for us older Daks who
have the round air filter stock system, you know that hose that runs from
the grill into the air filter assembly? Well I notice that its was a two
piece design and where it connected it was not a sealed or a tight fit,so I
broke out the clear gasket sealant and ran a bead around where is connects
to the metal housing so there is almost NO air loss whatsoever. So now I
got thinking about air flow, and I already have a K&N, but what really got
me thinking was the top air plate, the metal one. Well in the JEGS catalog
on page 134 shows this new K&N product called the X-Stream Air Flow Top
Plate. Now I remember someone on the DML saying that this was for the open
element filter people cause the top plate fits on the filter, not the metal
housing, but......what if I ordered the 14 inch top plate and it fit on
the housing and not the filter???? Would there not be a good tight seal
then for the round stock filter like the is with the stock metal top???
I just like the idea abiout drawing more air from the top of this assembly
as well as having cold air forced into the engine. ANY and ALL input on
this is greatly appreciated!!!! THANKS ALOT !!!!!
