If its anything like my '96, the upstream O2 sensor is used to monitor
the fuel/air ratio which the computer uses to make adjustments to keep it
in the right place. The downstream O2 sensor is used to monitor the
performance of the cat. I don't know wether or not they do anything about
misfire; my FSM didn't say anything about that; it just said they were
used to monitor the fuel/air ratio.
