through inspection with oversize tires and had no problems, they were
concerned with align ment and tread depth more than anything else. There
is a height limit for bumpers, I can't remember what it is. The
inspections are done by shops that are licensed by the state, no state
agency does vehicle inspections, except for emmissions testing and this
is only the Washington - Baltimore area. I installed headers on my '77
Ramcharger along with duals and never had any problems. As long as the
vehicles meet factory specs for emmisions, brakes, suspension
alignment, headlight alignment, glass, and all lights working you shouldn't
have any worries.

Leave it at a state agency for a day? BS ...
You find a service station/garage that has a Maryland State Inspector
(usually have a sticker on the door next to the accepted credit card
stickers) that says they are an authorized MD inspection station.
There are two inspections in MD. One is a safety inspection (done by
a service station/garage) and the other is an emissions inspection
performed at a state run facility.
The safety inspection is done 1) when you bring a car in from another
state and 2) at title transfer time (when you buy/sell a car)
Regarding a truck with oversize tires ... things they will ding you on
are 1) bumper height and 2) wheels sticking out past the body/fenders.
I believe the bumper height is two feet from the ground. If the
truck is too high people solve the inspection dilemma by just lowering
the bumpers with different brackets. If the tires stick out beyond
the fenders too much then people add a set of rubber mud flares around
the fender openings to pass inspection.
Regarding modified cars ... we do not need to have our old cars/muscle
cars equipped with factory pieces. Add on intakes, carbs, exhaust etc
... are ok. All you need to do is get it to pass the sniff test. The
only major exception is cars with catalytic converts need to retain
the converters. I think all cars prior to 1977 are emissions test
exempt.
If your cars are old enough ... you can put historic/antique/street
rod tags on it. No saftey inspection or emissions inspection. There
are drivability limitations though albeit loosely enforced.
