Mike,
I don't know what to say other than I built by homebrew exactly like the
unit from Airaid and they claim a HP increase. The only thing I did
differently was to use a flexible aluminum tube instead of a rigid plastic,
or aluminum tube. I have not put the truck on a dyno, as I really do not
care about anything except driveability. With the stock box, I was
constantly pushing on the gas to try and get going. Now with the tube and
K&N, I can accelerate much easier and with less pedal. I also don't have to
push into it as hard as I used to when passing on the highway. My mileage
looks like it went up about 1 MPG, not much, but enough when your average is
only 13.5 to start with. I have had the tube and K&N on now for about a
month and can only say it drives much easier. Whether this came from the
fact that it flows better because the tube is much straighter or because the
tube is larger than stock, which it is by about 1/8" ID, with the K&N, I do
not know. It is pulling more air than stock. Maybe not as much as a can on
top of the throttle body with a 14X3" filter on top, but then again, I'm
pulling the air from the opening in the fender which goes straight back to
the cowl at the bottom of the passenger side of the windshield. All in all,
I'm getting a little more, I don't know how much but it is more, of the same
cool air I did with the factory box and somersault tubes.

OK. I'm staying tuned. But my reservations about these kinds of things
still stand. You install an open element air cleaner, then you put a box
around it. Maybe it's just my lack of imagination, but how is this not
defeating the purpose of the open element? I also cited the drier vent tube
because it was easiest to type for my lazy self. :) Still a 4" ducting is
not that different from stock. Maybe a more direct route as opposed to the
twists and turns of the stock system will help some, but I would still like
to see some verified numbers to convince me. I'm not saying it won't work,
but...staying tuned.
