if it were an exhaust leak it would make the same noise all the time and
louder when you get on it as more exhaust leaks out. It sounds like
maybe a lifter. Maybe you could check the valve lash.

Subject: DML: Strange engine noise

Hi list, I've got a strange engine noise I can't figure out. For
those who don't know it's a '93 5.2L 77k miles. It sounds a little to me
like an
exhaust leak. In fact that's what I thought it was. The noise
started about a week ago. I didn't sweat it too much because I
figured one of my headers was loose. I have taken my headers off and
will be shipping them to HPC for some ceramic coating some time this
week. I figured after I got them off and got the stock manifolds back
on and tight that the "exhaust leak" would go away. It didn't. Now
I'm wondering what it could be. Like I said it sounds a *little* like
an exhaust leak, but not exactly. It's sorta a ticking sound that
corresponds with engine speed. It seems more pronounced when cold,
but does it when hot also. It seems to be coming from the rear area
of the engine. Revving the engine in neutral you can't hear it, but
under load when rpms are under 2500 you can hear it very well. It
doesn't sound to good so what could it be? Last week I removed my
throttle body and cleaned it real good could that have any effect? I
would think a leak at the TB would not produce a ticking sound since
there is a constant vacum of air through there.

My thoughts so far: bad spark plug wire? I had a 350 chevy that would
make this sound when a spark plug wire melted on the exhaust manifold,
but my idle is smooth and it runs pretty much the same as always.
Catalytic converter? Could the cat make a sound like this? I thought
if a cat failed the truck would run real poor. I get no "check
engine, and no error codes (I never get codes damnit!). I already
switched
SBEC's with no change, so it's not pinging (which I know what sounds
like very well). It wasn't my headers, and I'm running a brand new
stock y-pipe which doesn't have any leaks. Could this be a valve or
injector making noise? Timing chain?.....???

Sorry for the long post but this has bugged me all week, and I'm out
of ideas. Help me pleeeeeese.... ;-(
