Without looking at my 98 manual, I can tell from your description that the
clutch cylinder rod assy is similar to my old Toyota 4x4. It too would
squeak. The cause is located at the point which the rod contacts the rear of
the cylinder piston. The cure is to get some grease between the rod and the
point it contacts the piston.

The loose cap is a dust seal to keep crud off the cylinder wall, which is a
good idea since the hydraulic assembly is not rebuildable and must be
replaced when it leaks and/or fails.
