'98 5-Speed Clutch Hydraulics

Maybe someone on the list can help me out...
The hydraulic cylinder that's activated by the clutch
pedal has been "squeaking" lately, (it sounds like a dry
rubber seal) and after taking a look at the assembly,
it appears that I might need a new cylinder.

However, before I visit the dealer for what I expect to be
warranty work, I want as much info as possible.

Could someone with a '98 shop manual (I guess it's time
to buy my own copy!) tell me if the hydraulic cylinder that
mounts to the firewall is an "assembly" or a single unit?
Is there a maintenance note for the assembly? Lube, etc?

The reason I ask is that there's a spring loaded switch
that rides on the clutch pedal actuating shaft. I suspect
this is the starter interlock switch. This part can be pushed
"up" (towards the pedal pivot) the shaft a couple of inches
(against spring tension) which reveals a thick neoprene washer,
and a plastic cap that *looks* like it used to be glued into
the top of the cylinder, but is now able to slide up the pedal
shaft. Under the area where the plastic cap seats, I can see a
"C" clip and the offending rubber seal that's doing the
squeaking, (and annoying the hell out of me I might add).

I think the plastic cap probably serves to align the shaft,
and it should be firmly attached. The fact that it isn't allows
the shaft to be slightly misaligned, which is causing my "seal squeal".

Any info about this assembly would be greatly appreciated...before
I go in to arm wrestle the service manager. ;~D

Thanks!

Dan
