Probably, O2 is consumed by the exothermic reaction in the cat, hence, the
more efficient the "burn" the less O2 escapes the converter; conversely,
without a converter, no exothermic reaction and no reduction in O2 is sensed
by the downstream sensor, thereby setting a code. Does this sound right?
