Uhhhh,
You may want to poke your head into the DiRT mailing list. That is Dodge, i,
Ram, Truck, list. There are quite a few folks with the new Cummins ISB 24v
engine that are not all that happy. There have been several reports of less
than adequate power,as in 174 rear wheel horse, whereas the B series (12V)
engines were turning out 205 at the rear wheels. These are stock numbers.
The B series can also be hopped up as you mentioned, but the ISB, being
completely computer controlled is not upgradeable beyond air filter and
possibly exhaust behind the turbo. The exhaust would not do you much anyway
since it is already 3". Even the injector pump is computer controlled. When
you push the go peddle, you are telling the computer to give it more fuel.
There is no direct link between you and anything on the engine. Even Cummins
and Dodge have admitted that there is something wrong with the program in
one of the three computers in the loop and as of yet have not released a
flash that will take care of it. As far as tranny's go, no problem so far.
No one is making enough power to blow them up. Now the older B series is
another story, they are monsters, and those who are running them hard and
uprated with very heavy loads are having tranny problems. People are just
pushing them a little too hard. I am not trying to denounce the Cummins
engine. They rock, and they rock hard, but this years "monster" is a little
on the sickly side compared to last years. But, and this in where it starts
getting cloudy, the only people who seem to be disappointed are those that
used to or still own another truck with the B series engine as they have
something to compare with. Those that bought the ISB as their first diesel
are very happy with it's performance compared to the gas engined truck they
used to have. Also the mileage on the ISB is about 3-4 mpg less than the
older less sophisticated B engine.
Just food for thought.

This year's Cummins is a real monster. Ford finally got off their butt's
and made their PowerStruck engine a match for the Cummins so Cummins hit
back.
I think it's up to 250hp and 430#'s torque. It's getting up to a match the
V-10 almost. If you want some serious power out of the diesel you can add
about another $2K of mods from Gale Banks and crank out 300hp and 500#'s of
torque. I think that'd tow a couple of houses. Problem is, the tranny's
aren't keeping up with the engines and they are blowing out left and right
on
the heavy hauling dude's. CC says they're working on it.
The mileage the diesels get is incredible. I'm amazed everytime I see my
Dad's or Brother's fuel bill. It's way less than mine.
