On the subject of engines running with no oil in them, for years I drove Free
or $150 dollar cars to work. I would put in around $200 to make them run good
and safe and drive them till the engine went out and then junk them. Several
times I had engines go or something broke and I would just drive them home as
they were not worth paying someone to tow it. I drove a '78 aspen with a slant
six for 2 weeks with the oil light on before it threw a rod. I had a '78 ford
wagon which broke a piston and blew all the oil out the breather (it blew out
the dipstick also), I just drove it home 20 miles and it still ran ok the next
day with the plug pulled out of the bad cylinder. I hear all of these tests
where they drain the oil and run the motor and WOW, IT IS STILL RUNNING. My
experience has been that using regular motor oil and draining it will cause
motor failure in the long run but for a short commercial it will look like
nothing was wrong.
I'm sure that nobody normally drains their oil and sees what happens without
additives.
I guess I'm still a big sceptic on these additives. It is nice to hear some
real world guys telling stories of how it saved their engine. Keep them coming
in and maybe I'll change my mind.
